This page is dedicated to Gene, a band who blossomed in the mid-90s, beyond the obvious Smiths comparisons, to become purveyors of lyrically intelligent, guitar-led nuggets of musical beauty. Always rapturously received live, their recorded output found less of an audience as the nineties slipped into the noughties and their last studio album, Libertine, hardly sold, despite being thoroughly excellent. Inevitably, the band decided to call it a day with a final live show in December 2004... Not undue chart-worriers then, but a brilliant band, more than worthy of your consideration. Check out their B-sides for some well-chosen cover versions too...

Trivia... the band's original record label was called Costermonger... a costermonger was someone who hawked fruit, vegetables, fish or other goods from a cart, barrow, or stand in the streets...

More trivia... in later live performances, Gene were augmented by the keyboard skills of one Mick Talbot, formerly of The Merton Parkas and, more famously, The Style Council...

If anyone can help me fill in the gaps (particularly in the biography) please contact me.

The band's line-up was:
  • Martin Rossiter vocals, piano
  • Steve Mason lead guitar
  • Kevin Miles bass
  • Matt James drums
The band
  • 1993: band form as Gene, having previously been known as Spin until Rossiter joined.
  • April 1994: first commercial release ("For The Dead") on Costermonger, a label set up solely to promote Gene.
  • August 1994: "Be My Light, Be My Guide" tops the Indie chart.
  • 1995: winners of the NME's inaugural Brat award for Best New Act.
  • January 1996: Gene appear on now defunct but then seminal TV music show "Top of the Pops" for the first time, singing the re-released "For The Dead".
  • March 1997: Gene perform with a full orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall.
  • June 2000: the band's show at The Troubadour Theatre is broadcast over the Internet in a webcast of (then) record-breaking size.
  • December 2004: Gene perform together for the last time at The Astoria, London.
  • What happened next: after the band split, Steve and Matt formed Palace Fires, debuting live in Leicester in April 2006. Kevin is a college lecturer in Nottingham, but keeps his hand in by playing in a covers band. The Rozzer was also a vocal coach at the Access To Music centre in Brighton. He also plays with Call Me Jolene, and released a (stunning) solo album, The Defenestration of St Martin, in 2012.
