This page is dedicated to Thousand Yard Stare, a band who rode into the early-90's on the coat-tails of baggy. Sadly, they never really caught on, probably because they were just too tuneful with their guitars... plus they had Christian names like Giles and Dominic, which wasn't likely to get them past the first stop on the Tube line of musical stardom. I like them though...

Trivia... the band's record company was called the Stifled Aardvark Co. Ltd, whilst their records were distributed via Polydor. Producer Stephen Street (of Smiths/Blur affiliation) worked on both TYS albums.

If anyone can help me fill in the gaps (particularly in the biography) please contact me.

The band's line-up was:
  • Stephen Barnes vocals
  • Giles Duffy lead guitar
  • Sean McDonough bass
  • Kevin Moxon rhythm guitar
  • Dominic Bostock drums
The band
  • 1988: band form in Slough, Berkshire, UK
  • Easter 1989: first demo recorded
  • January 1991: first commercial release (Weatherwatching e.p.)
  • June 1991: the Keepsake e.p. hits the Indie top 5
  • August 1991: the Yardies play at the Reading Festival
  • August 1991: the Seasonstream e.p. peaks at Indie no.2 and later makes the UK top 75
  • What happened next: after the band split, Stephen Barnes formed Click with, amongst others, Wiggy (famed for his work with Billy Bragg). Click released one single, "Julia's Reactor", and two albums, "If It Ain't Broke Don't Fix It" and "'Til The Cows Come Home". The rest of the band teamed up with Nick Steele (TYS's engineer and occasional producer) to form Euphoria - they also released one single, "Stationary Man". [Thanks to Dave O and Peter M for this info.] Most recently (i.e. 4th Feb 2005) I've heard straight from the horse's mouth that Giles is involved in a new band, republicofheaven - they're gigging around the Brighton/South coast area and will be in the studio during the Spring. Oh, and Dominic is apparently back in the Slough area, working as a chiropractor!
  • UPDATE! (Thanks Phil). Stephen now lives and works in Bristol as a music plugger/band mgr/radio documentary producer. He manages a band called The Naturals and also plays keyboards in London band The Union Jackals. Kevin is an Edinburgh accountant and lives in Dunfermline. Sean is a social worker and lives in Brighton.
